What is a dental crown (also known as a tooth cap)?

Dental crowns have many benefits and functions, including restoring fractured teeth, covering dental implants, strengthening root canal treated teeth and replacing discoloured teeth.

Dental crowns provide a way to future-proof your teeth, protecting weak teeth from fracturing – giving you a stronger, healthier and better-looking smile. Check out our blog for more information on different types of dental crowns and alternative options.

When is a crown required?

  • Heavily filled, weak or cracked teeth. Large fillings fill the void but don’t reinforce the healthy tooth structure. Cracks can spread from the corners which can lead to cusp breakage.
  • Severely decayed teeth. If your nerve is still alive, the priority is to protect it from further injury and exposure. If the nerve dies, you are likely to develop a serious toothache and abscess.
  • Root filled with little remaining tooth. After you get a root canal it is vital to protect your tooth from breakage and reinfection.

How the One Visit Dental Crown (OVC) works

Traditional dental crowns are completed in two appointments. Firstly, your dentist will take an impression, which is then sent to a dental laboratory who custom make a crown for you. The dentist then bonds this to your tooth at a later date.

The OVC One Visit Dental Crown is more affordable as it is a crown that is pre-shaped to the “optimal standard” tooth anatomy. Your dentist orders in the specific size required for your tooth, removes it from the box and fits it to your tooth. It is your dentist who customises the OVC, rather than an external laboratory. The procedure is entirely completed at the chairside, which considerably reduces treatment time and eliminates the need for uncomfortable impressions,  third party dental technicians, and repeat visits.

Don’t just take our word for it – here’s what our customers are saying.

One Visit Dental Crown FAQs

On the market for over 5 years, the One Visit Crown is showing little wear after this time. We are confident it can last 10-15 years, depending on the condition of the tooth. Because this is new technology, we have not had enough time to do long term studies but the material it is made from has been on the market for some time and shows very good longevity.

The One Visit Crown is made in 5 sizes for each tooth. The dentist picks the correct size and then makes the One Visit Crown fit your tooth. The procedure is no more invasive than a filling and takes less than an hour. It is all done in one appointment, unlike regular crowns which usually require 2 visits, so you don’t need to go back to the dentist for repeat visits.

To book an assessment to see if the OVC is the right treatment for you, simply visit our find a provider page and search for a local OVC provider.

Most dentists offer the One Visit Dental Crown at a great price as it can be completed in half the time of a traditional crown and in one single visit. Each dentist sets their own price for the OVC so it is best to check directly with your dentist.

The One Visit Crown is only for premolar and molar teeth (back teeth). It isn’t for front teeth.
